What is a Speech Pathologist?
A speech pathologist is a professional qualified to assess and provide
therapy to children with communication difficulties including:
Speech:
- The child finds it difficult verbalising sounds
- The listener finds it difficult to understand the child
Language:
- The child has difficulty understanding and following instructions
- The child has difficulty using words and sentences
- The child has difficulty learning two languages
Voice:
- e.g. husky, sounds like they have a cold
Stuttering:
- The child’s speech contains repetition of words or sentences
- The child has difficulty getting words out.
Speech Pathologists work closely with families and Child Care workers
to support children with communication difficulties to participate
and be included at home and preschool.
Services Provided by BCRG Speech Pathology
Who is eligible for a speech pathology assessment with BCRG?
Any child aged between 0-6 attending a child care service in the
Bankstown Local Government Area is eligible for a free assessment after
the family and child care centre fill out an application
form and return it to BCRG.
Who is eligible for free speech pathology therapy services with BCRG Speech Pathology?
- Children who have had a speech pathology assessment by BCRG Speech Pathology
- Children who's assessment has identified a moderate to severe
language delay
- Children who are NOT receiving other Speech Therapy services
What
kind of free therapy services will children receive?
Children receive therapy in blocks of up to 6 group sessions. Children are
eligible for a maximum of two of these therapy blocks per year.
Therapy goals will be identified with the family and child care centre.
The speech pathologist will negotiate how these goals will be achieved
with families. Goals may be achieved through training and by supporting
the child in the Child Care Centre.
Who is NOT eligible for speech pathology therapy services with BCRG?
Following
a BCRG speech-language assessment, children who are identified as:
- Only
stuttering
- Having only speech difficulties ie. difficulties with producing
sound
- Having a mild language delay
These children will be referred to other
local speech pathology services including our own BCRG Kids Clinic (a fee for service speech pathology clinic). They will not be eligible for further free therapy
services with BCRG. Families will be provided with recommendations
and child care staff may be provided with a program with strategies
and activities to support the child’s goals in the home and child
care centre.
