Occupational Therapy at BCRG

The Occupational Therapy service at BCRG was funded for several years by ClubsNSW to deliver occupational therapy pilot programs to children in the Bankstown LGA. The Occupational Therapist provided relationship based therapy with the BCRG Speech Pathologist in a group called Communication Sense-ation.

The Communication Sensation Group:

Description:

  • A 10-week group program for children with autism and/or developmental delays and their families.
  • An Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist worked with families to set goals and priorities for the child and family
  • The therapists used relationship based approaches to enhance the child’s communication, attention, independence, and social interaction

Some general group goals included:

  • Develop attention and listening in small groups

  • Develop understanding and talking

  • Increase participation in daily routines e.g. mealtimes, toileting

  • Create safe play environments for the child to develop new skills

  • Develop positive interactions between the child and siblings

The program ran throughout 2009 and 2010.

This program is now available through the Helping Children with Autism Panel service.

Any enquiries can be directed to the early intervention team leader on 9796 7315.
